Summary : Medieval or later fishponds in Scrivelsby Park. The features survive as earthworks. The main pond measures 35 metres by 20 metres, the other is visible as a 40 metre long depression. Scheduled. |
More information : [TF 26956640] Moat [GT]. (1) This earthwork cannot be a true homestead moat, as the enclosed island is too small and rounded to have supported a building. It was probably constructed as a fishpond. Adjacent amorphous slopes along the south side of the stream suggest a string of former ponds contemporary with Scrivelsby Court. Published survey (25") correct. (2)
Pair of fishponds included in survey of earthworks conducted by C C Taylor and P Everson in 1978. (3)
The ponds described by authority 2 were mapped as earthworks from poor quality air photographs. The bank defined enclosure of the main pond measured roughly 35m by 20m. The inner mound is of similar construction to other fishponds thought to have been constructed for rearing carp (see SK 91 NE/34). One other fishpond was identified from air photos at TF 2704 6638, which was visible as a 40m long depression.
This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database. (4) |
