| Summary : A medieval parish church with attached almshouses, which transformed into a secular college, was founded in 1439-1440 by Lord Ralph Cromwell, and dissolved in 1547. The college was largely demolished in 1545 but parts still remain. It is situated within the grounds of the medieval Tattershall Castle.CONSTRUCTIONConstructed of Ancaster stone at 186 feet long the church comprises naves and aisles with west tower, transepts and a chancel. The roofs are constructed of ashlar and lead. It was built in one campaign with few subsequent alterations and at considerable expense due to the large proportions of the building. The church was built with relatively little ornamentation and there was a preference for triangular detail instead of arches. Originally, every window would have been inset with stained glass. HISTORYThe church was licensed in 1439 by King Henry VI to convert a Norman parish church into a Collegiate Church for 7 priests, 6 secular clerks, 6 choristers and 13 poor, old people in the almshouses. The building was begun in 1469 and the mason from circa 1475 was John Cowper. The belfry stage of the tower was under construction in 1482. The building work was completed by William of Waynflete. Most of the stained glass was removed to Stamford in 1745. The chancel was restored in 1815 and the roofs were repaired in 1893 to 1897. |

The secular college of the Holy Trinity, Tattershall, was founded in 1439-40 by Ralf, Lord Cromwell. The parish church, which was to be rebuilt, was transformed into a
college for 7 priests, 6 laymen, and 6 choristers. Buildings of the college were on the south side of the church. They have entirely disappeared. An almshouse for 13 poor persons was attached to it, [Almshouses TF 21195761] (1)
The college was dissolved in 1547. Holy Trinity Church was thoroughly repaired in the 19th century. At [`A']TF 21295784 (7) is a 15th century brick and stone building and at [`B'] TF 21275758 (7) foundations of a second. Both are scheduled college buildings. (2-8)
Church in normal use. The building at (`A') is of little character.
