The domestic chapel of St Nicholas was built in 1311 at Wykeham Hall,
the country residence of the Prior of Spalding.

The magnificent hall, chapel and grounds were moated, and traces of
the moat and the ruins of the chapel remain.

The estate passed to the Harington family in 1543, and Wykeham
Farmhouse is described as 16th century.

The chapel became ruinous in 1782. In 1881, several skeletons were
unearthed and a substantial lead coffin was seen. The remains were
re-interred. (2-3)

The chapel and the monastic grange were established at Wykeham in 1311. The chapel became a free chapel after the Dissolution. It was repaired in the 17th century but had fallen into disuse by the end of the 18th century. The remains of the chapel and its associated graveyard stand at the centre of the moated grange (See UID 1174907).

The unroofed chapel is built of limestone ashlar. The nave and chancel are one, and are entered through a doorway in the south wall. The north and south walls each have 3 large pointed windows and there is one in both the east and west walls. Some of the windows have been blocked, probably during the 17th century. A polygonal stair turret rises from the south-west corner. The outline of a former building can be seen on the western external wall. In 1881, the chapel floor was relaid and a number of skeletons and a lead coffin were uncovered. A small, enclosed graveyard adjoins the chapel to the east. This was in use from the second half of the 19th century. Listed Grade I and scheduled. (9)
