More information : TF 113732. Deserted medieval village of Stainfield. (1-2) Stainfield is an extant hamlet with church and school; but strong amorphous earthworks on both sides of and adjacent to the east-west road leading to Stainfield Hall are indicative of extensive 'ribbon' occupation and later desertion; rig and furrow, farm roads and drainage ditches are also visible. (see also TF 17 SW 12) Recognised house sites surveyed at 25". (3)
Earthwork remains of the Medieval and Post Medieval village of Stainfield were surveyed on the ground and mapped from good quality air photographs by the RCHME. These have mostly been levelled and were visible as cropmarks.
Earthworks directly flanking the E-W road of Stainfield Hall, described by authority 3 are identified as Medieval monastic remains (recorded in TF 17 SW 1) and Post Medieval formal gardens (recorded in TF 17 SW 16). The ornamental moat described by authority 3 has been re-interpreted as possible Medieval retting pits, associated with the monastic site (recorded in TF 17 SW 1).
A hollow way, centred at TF 1129 7293, is flanked by crofts. Those to the south of the hollow way are more fragmentary than those to the north. Scattered throughout the crofts are several ponds and/or pits. A large `block' of extant ridge and furrow lies to the west at TF 1083 7299. (Morph No. LI.534.15.1-5, LI.534.17.1)
