More information : [TF 1362 4626]. HOWELL HALL [G.T.] MOAT [G.T.] (1) Howell Hall is early 19th c. Materials from the old hall at Howell, which stood east of Ewerby road, are said to have been reused in the building of houses in the village. (2-3) A considerable proportion of these earthworks have been destroyed but the remains indicate, not a moat, but a multi-purpose, ditch complex for ornament, drainage and possibly wild fowling and fishing. Published survey, (25"), revised. Immediately to the south of the present Hall is a disturbed area where the tenant recollects brick & foundation stone being dug up "some years ago". (O.S. 1" 1824 shows buildings in this area and in the position of the present hall. There is nothing to indicate which, if any, represent the earlier hall). (4) |
