More information : [TF 02919688] Winghale Priory on site of [NAT] Priory Cell [GT] (Benedictine) [NAT] Human Remains found AD 1847. [TF 0294 9680] (1-2) Wenghale, or Winghale, was a Benedictine cell for a prior and possibly one or two monks, dependent on Seez, founded before 1115 and dissolved in 1400. It was finally granted to Trinity College, Cambridge. (3-4) There are no apparent structural remains of the Priory at what is now 'Whinghale Priory Farm'. The farmer states that human bones are often recovered from the gravel diggings to the south of the farm in disorder and close to the surface. (5) Three ditch sections, containing Iron Age and Romano-British pottery, have been exposed by gravel digging at Winghale Priory. Animal bones and slag were also found. The finds are in Scunthorpe Museum. (6)
The priory described by the previous authorities was seen as earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The site, centred at TF 0294 9672, comprises a number of enclosures and a series of fishponds (centred at TF 0293 9664). Surrounding the site to the east and west are the remains of a field system of ridge and furrow, possibly associated with the priory. (Morph No. LI.507.1.1, 1.2, 2.1)
The priory was also surveyed by RCHME's field section. Results of the survey are available in the NMR Archive and a description of the site has been published. (7-7a) |
