More information : [TF 0964 7941] Moat [GT] (1) A homestead moat with waterfilled northern and western arms and traces of a southern arm. The owner intends to fill in the moat "within the next six months" Published survey (25") revised. (2) All archaeological features at this site have been ploughed out. AM survey (1:2500) 1964 revised. (3)
The moat described by the OS was latterly reduced to a N-S ditch only. Early maps show water-filled arms in exactly the same configuration but further N. This rectangular arrangement around the 16th century Fulnetby Old Hall and on its axis is likely to be a Post Medieval formal garden layout rather than a Medieval moated residence. Fieldwalking within the ploughed moated area produced no Medieval pottery. (4)
The moat identified by authorities 1-2, and reinterpreted as probable formal garden features by authority 4, were visible as earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. At TF 0962 7942, the 'west' and 'east' arms of the supposed moat, reinterpreted as ponds of a Post Medieval formal garden, form a right angled configuration. To the north of these ponds, at TF 0957 7954, are three more ponds, in the same configuration, which were seen as earthworks now levelled, and as cropmarks. Between the two groups of ponds are a pair of straight drainage ditches, at TF 0958 7949. (Morph No. LI. 541.2.1-3)
