More information : TF 010 652 (1) Mere was a village of some importance with a church. The parish was united to Branston in 1418 and, by 1428, there were fewer than 10 householders. Many foundations remain. (1-2) The traces of this village are confined to the small park centred TF 008 652 in which Mere Hall stands. They consist of amorphous earthworks with occasional disconnected stretches of walling breaking the surface. The church was probably that of St. John's Hospital (see TF 06 N.W.1). (3)
The amorphous earthworks described by the previous authorities were seen on RAF vertical photographs at the grid reference stated. Also seen were some soilmarks in the field to the north at TF 0115 6535. No coherent pattern could be discerned, nothing was drawn. (4) |
