More information : [Area TF 0551 5679]. Linear crop marks photographed from the air in 1959 by J. T. Hayes may represent field boundaries of the Romano-British period. (1) The area is under plough and there is no surface indication of a field system. The farmer knows of no finds made in this area. (2) The topographic situation is on a gently sloping hill ridge, some 30.0m ASL. OS air photographs not available. Hayes' prints (Authy 1) now in private possession. No change since report of 4 1 65. (3)
The J.T. Hayes photograph cited by authority 1 was not seen. Other vertical and oblique photographs indicated that at the grid reference cited there are numerous cropmarks of linear features, which were interpreted as geological in origin rather than a Romano-British field system. However to the west and north of this area there were some archaeological features visible as cropmarks, described below. At TF 0543 5681 there is a Prehistoric or Roman, incomplete polygonal ditched enclosure, 105m by 70m, has an entrance on its northern side. From the entrance, curving to the east for 310m to TF 0565 5805, is a discontinuous double ditched trackway. It has a potential branch on its northern side at TF 0558 5805. Two ditches of a potential enclosure lie on the northern side of the trackway at TF 0565 5806.
Fragmentary enclosures to the north and west of these features are recorded seperately in TF 05 NE 39 & 40. (Morph No. LI.880.1.1-4)
