More information : [Area TF 052376] (2) Scot, Scott (4) or Water (3) Willoughby is mentioned in the Domesday Survey and later documents. Air photographs show traces of desertion in the area around the now isolated church of St. Andrew, TF 03 NE 20. During James' I's reign the manor and a residence here were purchased by Sir John Brownlow. In 1872 the site of the old hall was marked only by a few mounds (3). (1-4) Some slight amorphous earthworks are visible centred at TF 05453770 but the major portion on the A/P is now under plough. (5) TF 05303763. Much building stone is visible after ploughing on both sides of the stream, especially to the west of the road. (6) OS air photographs (b) reveal crop-marks of this settlement, and associated rig and furrow, in the indicated area. The gently sloping fields, at about 25.0m above sea level, were under crop and were not perambulated. No surface trace of this village could be found, except a small area of slight unsurveyable earthworks at TF 05403770, which are in rough pasture. This could be surface quarrying, and is being used partially as a tip. (7)
The Medieval settlement recorded by Authorities 1-7 was mapped from poor quality air photographs. The remains were visible on early photography as earthworks, but the area has now been levelled and later photography records cropmark evidence. The following features were identified:-
Systems of possible croft boundaries, defined by ditches, lie to both north and south sides of the stream. Centred at:-TF 0521 3771 and TF 0522 3763. To the north the system consists of 6 enclosures with an average breadth of 30m. A possible rectangular building, 20m by 10m, is centred at TF 0523 3772.
To the south of the stream, the system of croft boundaries are enclosed by a broad bank on the south and west sides. The crofts are approximately 70m by 30m and defined by ditches.
To the east of the modern road, the slight remains of possible field boundaries were recorded: a series of straight, parallel ditches with a maximum length of 100m Centred at:-TF 0547 3782 In this area there is also evidence of the former course of river meanders, which may be the slight earthworks seen by Authority 7.
