More information : [TF 0675 2963] The Aveland Moat [G.T.] (1) In a field known as the Avelands, about one mile west of Aslackby, was a moat enclosing an area 300 yards by 150 yards. The site is the traditional meeting place of the Wapentake of Aveland, to which there are several references in the Domesday Survey. It is said that, about 1736, the Sessions for the Division were opened here under an oak tree, and subsequently adjourned to Folkingham. (a) Traces of a building were to be seen within the moat. The feature no longer exists. (2-5) No trace remains. Published site now arable. (6) No change since 17 5 65 (7)
The moat referred to by the authorities above was visible as a cropmark and this and associated features have been mapped from good quality air photographs. The moat was visible as a rectilinear asymmetric enclosure, defined by a large ditch and banks, and measures 105m by 40m. Apparently attached to the moat are a series of ditched boundaries possibly also serving as feeder drains for the moat. These boundaries stretch about 250m in various directions from the moat. Attached to one of the boundaries is a small rectilinear enclosure, measuring 60m by 40m, centred at TF 0685 2970. Close to this, centred at TF 0683 2965, is what appears to be the remains of a mound 25m in diameter. (Morph No. LI.816.1.1-4)
No traces of the building referred to by the previous authorities were visible within the moat.
