More information : The priory at Great Wothorpe, a Benedictine nunnery dedicated to the Blessed Mary, was founded in the 12th century. In 1354, after the Black Death, the priory was merged with St. Michael's Priory, Stamford. No trace remains of the priory or adjacent parish church. (1) No further information was obtained during field investigation. (2) The priory was in Great Wothorpe village, near the church [Area TF 025 053] (3)
An examination of all the available air photographs revealed no evidence of what could be positively identified as earthworks associated with the priory. The earthworks visible in the vicinity of TF 025 053 all appear to be associated with the Medieval settlement of Wothorpe recorded in TF 00 NW 58. (4)
Wothorpe. The priory of St Mary is said to have been founded in the reign of Henry I but it was doubtless founded in the 12th century and may have been intended as an Arrouaisian house. In 1292 the buildings were ruinous and the nunnery was merged with Stamford priory (TF 00 NW 22) in 1354. (5) |
