Summary : Medieval church, possibly raided by the Lancastrian army in 1461 having been ruinous for some time. It was amalgamated with the Church of St. Peter in 1462, which itself was later amalgamated by the Church of All Saints. It was probably located at the site of All Saint's Tithe Yard where a coffin 'dated 1464' was uncovered, and where in 1895 a vault measuring 10 ft. by 8 ft. was discovered. There are no extant remains surviving above ground. It was extant in 1157 when it was known as St. Mary the Lesser, and was located outside the town boundary. It had aquired the name 'de Bynnewerk' by 1209, suggesting that the town walls had by now extended beyond the church. |
