('A'-SS 63764404) Stone (NAT) (1)

Published stone No 11 ('A') and those additional stones numbered
12, 13 and 14, in this field.
(SS 63764404) 'A' Stone No 11 : Erect stone aligned WNW - ESE.
Height 4ft. 4ins. Width 2ft. Thickness 19ins at base tapering to
10ins at top. It stands in a slight hollow 1ft. deep and 10ft.
dia., probably caused by sheep rubbing against the stone.
(SS 63714398) 'D' Stone No 12 : Recumbent stone; length 3ft. 9ins;
width 2ft. 4ins. tapering to 1ft. It stands in a slight hollow 6ins
deep.
(SS 63864400) 'C' Stone No 13 : Erect stone aligned NW - SE;.height
1ft 7ins; width 1ft. 10ins.; breadth at base 1ft. tapering to 7ins.
(SS 63904402) 'D' Stone No 14 : Erect stone, 3ft high, width 2ft.
7ins. at base tapering to a point; 12ins broad at base tapering
to 7ins.

Situated on the spur of a hill where pits, earthworks, trenches
and ancient walls abound.
Stone No. 11 is of brown grit 4ft 2ins high, 2ft. wide and 2 ft.
thick.
No 12 is of grey quartz 3ft 6ins high 2ft 9ins wide and would be
conical in shape if set upright.
No 13 is of quartz and grit 2ft 1in. high, 3ft 2in wide and
1ft 11in. thick and irregular shaped.
No 14 is of known grit 2ft 11ins high, 2ft 3ins wide and 2ft thick,
triangular in form. (2-5)

The measurements given in Authy 3 are correct in so far as measurements can be given of objects of irregular shape. The geological descriptions by Authy 4 are correct. The description of the field contained in Authy 4 is romantic. The walls are as ancient as the enclosure act and the pits are disused quarries. The earthworks are probably the result of the upcast from these diggings. The trenches may be light cultivation drains. Apart from this there is a certain "unevenness" about the field which is not so readily explained but it forms no pattern. Some of the stones may have come from the quarries but as no rock face is now exposed no definite decision on this point could be reached. (6)

There are signs that the fields were formerly subdivided. Stone
'B' could be a natural protrusion or a broken off stump; the
others are more likely to be rubbing stones than prehistoric
standing stones. (9)

SS 639440. Listed as a stone setting of four stones and also as four standing stones. (11)

As described. It remains uncertain whether these stones are prehistoric standing stones or rubbing posts. `B' however, at SS 63694400 appears to be a natural grounder rather than an upright stone. The remaining three, if prehistoric, do not appear to be a setting in the accepted Exmoor pattern: they are far too dispersed (12).
