More information : (SP 9293 8999) Roman Villa (GS) (Site of) (1) A Roman villa with three successive periods of building, being of winged corridor type in its final phase, dating from late 1st or 2nd century to 350AD with some further occupation of the site to late 4th century; first uncovered in 1738 and partly re-excavated in 1954-5 to total destruction by iron mining. There was considerable evidence for iron working and a workshop with three furnaces was probably for this purpose. Re-sited from plan to SP92948999 (4).
