Location :
Leicestershire
Harborough
Drayton
Grid Ref : SP8305093100
Summary : The site of multi period occupation, (Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon). Field walking and excavation uncovered a Late Iron Age occupation site indicated by pottery finds. A Roman villa site is indicated by building remains, tesseallated floors, roof and flue tiles; pottery evidence suggests a late 3rd century AD date. Field walking indicates that the site may spread northwards into Nevill Holt parish. A possible Anglo-Saxon settlement site is indicated by pottery finds.
More information : SP 83059310. A Romano-British site adjoining Prestgrave deserted village, Drayton (SP 89 SW 14) was found in 1971. Subsoiling had disturbed stone footings and tessellated flooring. Roof and box tiles as well as plaster have been recovered. Pottery includes mortaria, samian, grey ware, colour coated ware and local coarse wares. Apart from the samian, the pottery suggests a late C3rd date. Selected finds have been deposited with Leicester Museum. (1)

Late Iron Age pottery has been picked up in Stocking Field, Drayton. (2)

In 1986 the material from 1978 fieldwalking was re-sorted and both Iron Age and Anglo Saxon sherds were noted. Fieldwalking undertaken in 1986 produced 251 roman sherds as well as middle and Late Iron Age sherds. Some Saxo Norman and Medieval pottery was also recovered. (3)

LE 26, 68 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (4)
