Summary : St Leonard's Priory. This was a Premonstratensian cell of Lavendon Abbey from before 1166 but it was abandoned circa 1203-4. It was refounded as an independent Benedictine priory before 1219 and dissolved in 1535. There are earthworks representing the site.
More information : (SP 816345) Site of (NAT) Snelshall Priory (NR) (Benedictine). (1) Snelshall Priory (Benedictine) founded 1203-19, dissolved 1535. There was a Premonstratensian cell of Lavendon Abbey from before 1166 to the foundation of the Benedictine Priory. (2) Precinct ditch and fish ponds. (3-4) See annotated 1:2500 survey and illustration card. (5) A rapid examination of air photography (6a) shows the priory earthworks.(6)
