Summary : 19th century house on the site of a monastic grange of St Albans. There is no clear evidence that it was moated. A skeleton of unknown date was found in the vicinity in the 19th century.
More information : (SP 8454 1999) The Abbey (NR) (1) "The Abbey" house was almost completely rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of the ancient country house of the Abbots of St Albans. A moat enclosed the grounds and a large fishpond remains. Some years ago (pre 1902) a skeleton was discovered near the moat. (2-3) "The Abbey" (name verified) is essentially 19th century and not outstanding. The later re-building has completely destroyed all traces of Md work. No evidence of a moat or fishponds was found. A large lake to the SW of the house is probably contemporary with the re-Building of the house in the 19th century. The burial mentioned by authority 3 is not known of locally.
