The Cistercian Abbey, originally founded at Otley in 1138, was moved to Thame c 1140. It was in a ruinous state in 1525 and dissolved 1539. (2)
The remains of Thame Abbey, consisting of the abbot's lodgings, early 16th century and a 13th century range to the north, are now incorporated in Thame Park, which is mainly 18th c (Plan). (3)
Thame Park (name verified) is an outstanding early Georgian house built 1740. It incorporates the possible kitchen wing and the Abbots Hall of the Cistercian Abbey (see VCH plan). There is no trace and no knowledge of further monastic buildings. The "fishpond" to the S of the house is contemporary with the 18th century emparking. (See SP70SW20). (4) |
