More information : (Area centred SP 55808385) (1). The Pulteneys had depopulated their manor of Misterton before the opening of the 16th century, or at least soon afterwards. In 1524 there was, in addition to Sir Thomas Pulteney, a second landowner and seventeen labouring families. By 1564 only three families remained. Joan Thirsk, gives the date of full enclosure as 1507. The parish church has survived in tact. (1-4) No extant remains of a depopulated village were seen in the area of Misterton Hall and church. Fragments of old field boundaries can be seen in former park land, now rough pastures. A substantial hollow-way, centred at SP 55598403, leads down to the River Swift. No local knowledge of a village site was found. (5) Some faint marks are visible on RAF APs. St Joseph APs appear to show two moats. (6,7) The markings on St Joseph's APs are of a double moated enclosure centred to SP 55738412. Surveyed at 1:2500. These were the only surveyable remains of desertion seen in the area. (8)
