More information : Site of late 13th c. moated grange of the monks of Pipewell Abbey, in the Close of Rugby School. The moat was filled in c. 1816 but it is laid down on a plan of 1749-50. (plan unspecified). Connected with this grange, and also in the close, were 'the square pool', near the old bath, and the moat surrounding 'The Island'. These formed stews for fish. (1)
Found in removing a tree in the close, south-east of the chapel: a leaden token "of the 14th c. or later ... its exhibits a cross with a pellet in each quarter". In Bloxam's possession, and thought by him tobe connected with the grange. (2)
The exact site of this grange was not determined. Rugby School Close is centred at SP 503 748 and 'the island' at SP 5036 7477. (3) |
