Summary : An adulterine castle, probably built in the reign of King Stephen. Modern development now occupies the site. |
More information : (SP 5041 7548) Moat (AT) (and detail) (1) There was a little castle at Rokeby (Rugby) "... which stood about a furlong from the church northwards as is to be seen by the banks of earth and part of the moat yet remaining. I am of opinion that this was one of those castles built in King Stephen's time ... the inhabitants have it by tradition that it was Sir Henry Rokesbyes' castle". (2) Norman spur found 60 years ago on the site of the moated area in the field behind Mr. Darby's house in Church Street, Rugby. The spur is in Bloxam's possession. The moat represents the early Md. Manor-house of Rugby. (The site is now built over). (3) Dugdale's (Authy 2) remarks on this feature are quoted by Chatwin who lists it as an Adulterine Castle. (4) Modern development occupies the site. (5)
