An Augustinian priory dedicated to St. Edburga was found between 1182 and 1185. and dissolved in 1536. In 1962-3, massive rubble wall-footings and burials were revealed 150 yds. ESE of the church (SP 584221), in Old Palace Yard where the priory site was partly excavated in 1819. (2-5)
The excavations in 1962-3 proved the site of the priory to be at SP58412217 (a). The site has since been developed into a housing estate, and there are no extant Remains. Finds from the 1962-3 excavations in the Ashmolean Museum, and more recent finds - including encaustic tiles and stone mouldings - are in the possession of David Watts, 3 Manchester Terrace, Bicester. SP 584222. Development at the Palace Yard site in 1964 and 1973 revealed foundations of the north and south aisled nave of the priory church, the overall width of which was 65ft. and the length at least 74ft. However the difference in size between the north and south aisles, walls, and pier bases, suggests at least two building periods. (7-9) |
