More information : (SP 59751221) Studley Priory (NR) and site of (NAT) Priory (NR) (Benedictine founded circa AD 1176) (NAT) (1) Studley. The priory of St Mary was founded by Bernard of St Walery circa 1176 and his charter reads as if he endowed a community of women already there; about 20 years later his son seems to have changed the site of the nunnery and he was also recognized as founder (2). It was a large nunnery, with 50 nuns in the late 13th century, but after the Black Death there were only 10. The priory seems to have been suppressed in 1536, but to have been refounded, and it was finally surrendered 19 11 1539. There were then only 7 nuns besides the prioress (3). The present building, now a private hotel was built mainly in 1587 and 1622 with 19th century additions. The north wing was converted into a chapel in c 1639 (4). Gd II listed building (6). (2-6) Studley Priory (name verified) is outstanding; it is still used as a private hotel. (7)
Customer comment recieved September 2016: The Priory is now a private house.(8)
