More information : [Name at SP 54550224] NUNNERY [G.T.] (Remains of) (1) Littlemore [attributed to that parish] A House of Benedictine Nuns, founded AD. 1134-54. There were apparently seven nuns in 1445, and six nuns, who seem to have been an undiciplined lot, in 1517 (a). The priory was suppressed in 1525 for Wolsey's college at Oxford. (2) [SP 54560231]. Two walls only remain, these run parallel to each other about 15ft apart, they are approx 12ft high, 20ft long and 1' thick. Visited 1.7.54. (3) Besides the walls mentioned in T3 the whole block N-S of the farmhouse is C15th, much altered. The east wall contains 5 good 1st floor windows of the C15th and one on the ground floor. The rest are C16th - C20th. A fine late C16th staircase is in a projecting block on the west of there are at least 3 good C16th fireplaces. Almost certainly the east or west range of the cloister buildings of the nunnery substantially intact. (4) |
