Hob Uid: 338554
Location :
Oxfordshire
South Oxfordshire
Sandford-on-Thames
Grid Ref : SP5320001850
Summary : Built as a preceptory of the Knights Templars shortly after 1240, when land was granted to the Order by Thomas the younger of Sandford. After the dissolution of the Order 1308-12, it passed to the Knights Hospitallers by 1325. It was incorporated into the camerae of the Prior of England in 1371. After the dissolution of the Hospitallers, circa 1530, it became a farmhouse, (See SP50SW69).
More information : [SP 53200185] Knight Templars Preceptory [GT] (Site of) (1)

Sandford. This was one of the largest English houses of the order of Knights Templars outside London. It was founded AD 1239-40, and the community appears to have numbered about eight, including the preceptor and a priest brother. After the suppression of the order it became a house of the Hospitallers (AD 1312) and was finally dissolved in 1540. (2)

The earliest identifiable feature appears to be a small Tudor doorway in a barn (SP 53170184) though it is uncertain whether this has any connecton with the Hospitallers. The adjacent building, Temple Farm, is apparently 16/17th c. (3)

(SP 53200185). Site of Knights Templar Preceptory. Linear earthwork and ditch; second ditch parallel 30m apart (centred SP 533018). (4)

Bronze pyx cover found at site; dates to C11th and is similar in style to Byzantine school. (5)

The linear features described in authority 4 were mapped from poor quality air photographs during the Thames Valley NMP project. They represent a hollow way associated with the shrunken Medieval village at Sandford on Thames (SP 50 SW 66), and are more accurately located at SP 5347 0174. (6)
