Summary : Site of Cistercian Abbey founded in 1281 and dissolved in 1536. The only surviving features of the abbey include sections of the Precinct wall and a 15th century gateway. Excavations have recovered part of the plan of the east claustral range to the north of the church, and the west end of the aisled nave.
More information : 1.[SP 50620644] SITE OF REWLEY ABBEY [GT.] (1) 2. Founded 1281, this Cistercian Abbey was suppressed in 1536;1,2 most of its buildings seem to have been demolished before the end of the 16th cent.(1) The remains now (1939) consist of a length of precinct wall & a doorway of 15th cent. date, in poor condition [SP 50700646](1) (2-3) 3. "I have been unable to locate a gateway at SP50700646 but have surveyed a gateway in an old wall at SP50670646. From an entry in the Revision ONB - 1938 which states "an ancient gateway formerly leading to the river from Rewley Abbey situate on west side of Upper Fish Row" it seems probable that the feature I have surveyed is the gateway in question, it is known locally as 'The Water Gateway'.
