2.[Centred at SP 5124-0582] Black Friars Priory: The Second site: When the Friars moved from their original house within the city walls [Oxon 33 SE 133] they acquired a new site outside South Gate, situated on an island south of Littlegate St. and west of St. Aldates. Presumably the friars began to build on the site about 1236. The Priory Church was finished c.1246. The buildings of the Dominican priory, as is clear (a.b) were situated in the northern half of the property in the area below Littlegate St., roughly marked out by Albion Place, Cambridge St. Speedwell St. and Commercial Rd. Other evidence, such as a section of stone wall, skulls, coffins and various relics dug up from time to time, enable us to locate the church between Albert St. and Commercial Rd. just below the point where Cambridge terrace runs into Albert St. [SP51210584]. Today all trace of Blackfriars has disappeared. The demolition of the priory begun as soon as the house wasa dissolved in 1538. (2-4)
