More information : Bishop King's Palace, the early 17th cent. timber-framed building in St. Aldate's St. is to be repaired. (1) [SP 51390585] House of three stories with attics; the walls are of stone and timber-framing and the roofs are slate covered. The main house was built by Thomas Smith c.1622-28, but seems to have incorporated portions of an earlier building. The house on the W., formerly a separate entity, was built perhaps c.1600. The E. front is ashlar faced with an embattled parapet and a curvilear gable. Name: "The Old Palace". Condition good. (2-3) No mention is made of the name "Bishop King's Palace' in either of the refs. in T.2., with that of "The Old Palace", however, a plan produced in (1) indicates the same position as that shown in R.C.H.A.M. (4) Bishop King's House [AT] (5) The building is not the one inhabited by Bishop King (Bishop of Oxford 1542). It is very possible that he lived in a house on the site of the present building. (6)
Nos 86 and 87 St Aldate's Street. (The Old Palace, Bishop King's Palace) RCHM 154 Built in two sections. (1) the main range built circa 1622-8 by Thomas Smith and probably incorporating the core of an earlier structure. (2) the west range being an earlier house of C16-C17. (7)
