BRANDON CASTLE

A castle, built circa 1225 and destroyed in 1266, but rebuilt in 1309. Excavations in 1947 uncovered a small rectangular keep which surmounts a moated mount. There are extensive outworks covering 6 or 7 acres which consisted of broad moats and sheets of water. Dugdale noted moats and heaps of rubbish when he visited the site in 1656. Finds recovered from the excavations included pottery, iron objects and coins. Scheduled.
