Sudeley Castle

Hob Uid: 335929
Location :
Warwickshire
Nuneaton and Bedworth
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SP3577089090
Summary : Site of a moated manor house of the Sudeley family, now destroyed.
More information : (SP 3577 8909) Sudeley Castle (Site of) (G.T.) Moat (G.T). (1)

Sudeley Castle has the remains of a fairly large moat; there is a little water at one corner, but generally it is only a shallow depression. It was the Manor House of the Sudeleys, who took their surname from their Gloucestershire home; evidently it was a place of some importance, but apparently not known as a castle till comparatively recently. (2)

This would be more correctly described as - Sudeley Castle - site of Manor House. (3)

There are no visible remains of the Manor House to be seen within the enclosed area of the moat, which is of normal Homestead type, though in rather poor condition. The site of the moated manor house excavated prior to open cast mining. (4)

Remains of a stone building were found at the east end and lighter foundations on the north side. No material earlier than
the 13thc. or later than the 14thc. was found. (5)

Published survey 1/1250 revised. (6)

Griff Manor House (Sudeley Castle). Excavation report. (7)

Scheduled as 'Site of Sudeley Castle, Griff'. (8)

Descheduled. (9)

Additional bibliography (10)

The open cast mining refered to in authority 4 has destroyed the site. The sie is now infilled. (11)
