More information : [SP 31797124] GATEHOUSE [G.T.]. (1) The Gatehouse, with the hospitium attached, is noticed by Sir Wm. Dugdale, quoting as his authority the Register of Stoneleigh as having been erected by Abbot Hockele [c.1349]. It is mainly in the Decorated style but appears to have undergone alteration in early part of the C17th. (2) The Gatehouse still serves its original purpose, structurally complete and inhabited. It was built by Abbot Richard de Hockele in 1346. (3) Monastic Gatehouse - built of red sandstone in the Decorated style. As stated in (3), it still serves its original purpose, is structurally complete and inhabited, being used as the Stoneleigh Abbey Estate Office and also living quarters. (4) No change. (5) Abbey Gatehouse classed Grade I. (6)

Stoneleigh Abbey gatehouse, comleted in 1346 by Robert de Hockele, 16th Abbot of Stoneleigh. Two-storeyed with an attic, it consists of an entrance way, and adjoining coeval hospice to the East, which was extended further to the east and converted into a dwelling in the mid C17th. Grade I.
