Hob Uid: 334843
Location :
Oxfordshire
West Oxfordshire
Minster Lovell

Summary : Mid 15th century, incorporating some 13th century work. Plan of two-bay chancel, central tower, two-bay transepts and three-bay nave. Probably built by William, Lord Lovell. The church probably stands on the site of an earlier church dedicated to the cult of St Cynehelm, the murdered son of King Coenwulf of Mercia (796-821, but said to have died before his father's death). It is mentioned in Domesday as a `minstre'.

St Kenelm's Church, dating from the 15th century, is partly built on
earlier foundations. A few fragments of early 13th century work
remain in the south transept: outside, two shallow buttresses on the
east corner, and inside a wide string course. The 15th century
