Summary : Moated Cistercian grange of Stoneleigh Abbey represented by a square moat.
More information : (SP 2787 7599). Bockidene Grange (Site of) (G.T.): Moat (G.T.). (1) This grange was built by the monks of Stoneley. (2) Bockidene Grange - Botindon 1262 Ass, Bokeden 13th Leger Bk, Bokyden, 13th Leger Bk 1327, 1332 SR; Bokyndene-graunges 1391 Pat; Bokenden Grange in Hurst 1542 LP; Bukingtons Grange t. Hy 8 Rental, Bokendens al. Bulkyngtons grange 1542 Min Acct. (3) Bockidene Grange. Various local enquiries established the fact that this moat is reputed to be the site of Bockidene or Bockendon Grange, destroyed at the Dissolution. (Note place-names in (3) stop c.1542). Moat - a near square, homestead moat the southern and western arms of which are waterfilled, the remainder dry. The enclosed area is now occupied by two buildings and there is no sign of former habitation. General condition of moat, fair - heavily overgrown. (4) Report of authy. 4 still correct. The present Grange is modern. Published survey of moat (25") revised. (5)
