More information : Town Wall, the part extending north west from West Gate, Grade I. Stone town wall, medieval. Extending from West Gate, below the Master's Terrace of the Leycester Hospital, as far as the north west corner of the hospital garden. (1) It is uncertain whether the west garden wall of Lord Leycester's Hospital represents the remains of the 15th century town wall. (2-3) Examination of the stone wall adjacent to 15 The Butts indicates that it is older than the houses on either side and probably part of the town wall. (4) (The exact position of this portion of wall is not clear but is probably at SP 28271650.) (5-6) (For excavations on the line of the medieval defences see SP 26 NE 39,46 and 47 plus SP 26 SE 42 and 62.) (6) The east and west gates through the wall survive (SP 26 SE 76 and 77 respectively). The position of the north gate can be postulated (SP 26 NE 51) as can the southern extent of the town before the extension of the castle in the late 18th century. (5-7) Additional bibliography. (8)
