Summary : The site for the Dominican Friary was obtained for the friars by Ralph Boteler, Baron of Wem, and building was in progress for a church and to house the 30-10 friars. It was dissolved in 1538. No trace of the friary remains, but its location is preserved in the street names, Chapel Court, Friars Court, and Monk Street. |
More information : Friar St. is replete with the memory of the Old Black Friars Monastery, which was situated somewhere about opposite to St. Pauls Ch., for out of it runs Chapel Court, and this joins Friars Court, and Monk St. The Black Friars settled in Warwick in Henry III's reign. (1)
The house was surrendered into the Kings hands by Deed, dated Oct. XX. 30. H.8. (2)
Black Friars Monastery and/or Burial Ground in this area [centred on SP 27856463] finds made include stained glass recovered in 1835 and now in Warwick Museum. (3)
