More information : (Area SP 2130 0224) Roman Villa rediscovered in 1937 near Great Lemhill Farm. There is a much mutilated mound with walls and Roman pottery. (1) Lechlade, Roman Villa remains 600 yards NE of Great Lemhill Farm. Scheduled. (2) (SP 21180249 - Sited from tracing enclosed with letter). With reference to (1) a letter was sent to MOW asking for further information. The reply stated that O'Neil put up the site for scheduling, and gave the reference as Defoe's Tour (1742), 11, 244. (See SP 20 SW 1 a possible Roman Bath House which fits Defoe's description of being near Lechlade). (9)(3) At the Donovan site there is no evidence of a Roman building and the area forms part of the river's flood-plain. At SP 21200249, which closely corresponds with the Ministry's siting, there is an amorphous mound which is approximately 50 metres across and has a maximum height of 1.3 metres. There were no traces of walling, but fragments of Roman tile and pottery, which included a piece of samian, were found during investigation; and there has been a considerable amount of desultory digging. (4) A disturbed mound about 170 ft long by 80 ft across, and up to 3 ft high, at SP 21200250, marks the site of the Roman building. Pottery and building debris, including limestone, tufa, tiles and sandstone roof-tiles, are exposed in animal burrows. Part of the site was excavated in 1937, but the results have not been published. (4) Information as in Authy.4 now published. (5)
