More information : (SP 2852 0088) Friar's Court (NAT) (site of) Monastery (NR) (Name SP 2856 0084) Moat (NR). (1) Friar's Court, a 17th/18th c house, with a moat situated just to the south, said to have been built on a monastic site. There appears to be no documentary evidence to support a monastic site here (2-4)
Friars Court is a three storey building of which the upper part is a later addition. The front of the house has been cement rendered. It retains the 17th century windows and porch, but it is not of special interest. See G.P. The south, west and part of the north side of the waterfilled moat remain. A copy of a map, dated 1840, which is in the owners possession shows a complete four sided moat, with an entranceway at approximately SP 2857 0093, but this is not now evident from ground inspection. There is no evidence to substantiate a monastic site, but the owner says a building shown on the 1840 map at SP 2857 0086 was traditionally a chapel. (5)
