BERWOOD HALL [ GT ] (1)

Berwood Hall. A post-Domesday manor first mentioned in the reign of Henry II when Sir Hugh de Arden gave the canons of Leicester his manor of Berwood and a hermitage there. (2)

Temp. 8. Henry III two priests are mentioned in the chapel of the Blessed Mary at Berwood Hall, but by the beginning of Henry VI's reign the chapel had disappeared. At the Dissolution the property reverted to the Crown and was
purchased by Thomas Arden for #272 10s.0d. The buildings probably fell into decay. The present farmhouse also known as Berwood Hall appears to be of late 17th C. date. (3)

Moat [GT] (4)

At Berwood Hall there are the remains of a moat. (5)

The site of this former monastic grange and later 17th C. farmhouse together with the attendant moat have completely disappeared, having been destroyed during the construction of an airfield and factory premises. (6)
