More information : (SP 00109848) Moat (NR). (1) Three sides of a rectangular homestead moat, waterfilled and measuring 330ft, 200ft and 190ft in length. (2) Documentary evidence supports the identification of this site as Walsall Manor House. Excavation in advance of development in 1971 revealed a line of post holes in the bank and what was apparently part of a 14th century kitchen range Plan. (2-3) The remains of a rectangular homestead moat measuring overall 90.0m E-W by 100.0m approx. N-S of which the S arm and greater part of the W arm remain, waterfilled. The arms average 18.0m wide and 2.0m deep. The southern half of the E arm remains dry and reduced by tipping. The northern end of the moat has been filled in, and the ground partly occupied by a late 19th century public house. The island area, at present waste ground, is due for future development. There are no surveyable remains at the site of the 1971 excavations at SP 00079849. Published 1:1250 survey revised. (4) The moat has now been completely filled in and the ground has been levelled prior to development. MSD revised. (5)
