Summary : The Birmingham and Gloucester Railway was authorised in 1836 as a standard gauge railway from the London and Birmingham line at Aston (Curzon Street Station) to Gloucester, and avoided Worcester, Bromsgrove, Tewkesbury, Droitwich, and Cheltenham, which was served by a branch line. Gloucester and Cheltenham were linked in 1840, and Cheltenham - Bromsgrove in 1841. In 1845, the Birmingham and Gloucester Company was first leased, and then absorbed by, the Midland Railway, along with the Bristol and Gloucester Company, thereby easing direct links from Birmingham to Bristol. The major feature of the route is the Lickey Incline, which at 1:37 is the steepest on the British main lines. The track was doubled in 1967. Local passenger traffic was removed form the Bristol - Birmingham line in 1967. |
