Summary : Site of church rebuilt in the 14th and 18th centuries, and built on the site of an Anglo-Saxon church. The latter was exposed in 1978, firstly as an apsidal building, followed by a small rectangular building which was enlarged in the late 11th and early 12th century. A 7th century hanging-bowl was found interred in a cist in the centre of the phase two rectangular building. The original excavation interim reports suggested that the church was that founded by St Paulinus in 628-9, and described by Bede a century later as ruinous. However, radiocarbon-14 assays from some of the 150 inhumations associated with the Saxon churches covered almost the entire Saxon period. There are three alternative interpretations of the evidence:A) The apsidal building is a late Roman structure, St Paulinus church lies elsewhere, and the hanging bowl was buried in the grass-covered earthworks.B) The radiocarbon dates are unreliable, and should be read at 2 standard deviations which would then allow the apsidal structure to be the church of St Paulinus.C) The small rectangular structure is the church of St Paulinus and the apsidal building is not related to it. |
