Monument Number 326445

Hob Uid: 326445
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
North Carlton
Grid Ref : SK9432077710
Summary : Former moated Medieval manor house. Post Medieval formal garden reusing the moat, seen as earthworks.
More information : [SK 9427 7775] Moat [G.T.] Old Hall. (1)

Henry VIII stayed at North Carlton manor house in 1541. [Not
known if this is the same site.] (2)

Three arms of the moat remain, one water filled and the others
dry. Published survey (25") revised. The Old Hall certainly dates
from the Tudor period but has had many alterations and additions,
including a porch added in the 19th c.
See GP 114/5 (Colour.) (3)

The Medieval moat described by authorities 1-3 was seen as
earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The north
and east arms of the moat were recorded, centred at SK 9432 7771.
The dry arm was not visible on available photography. The moat was
reused as part of a formal garden in the Post Medieval period. This
garden is defined to the east of the moat by two banks, centred at
SK 9442 7772 and SK 9436 7767. The moat and formal gardens were
part of a field survey carried out by the RCHME (4a).
(Morph No. LI.643.1.1 - 1.2)

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
