More information : [SK 9401 5755] Church [GT] (Site of). (1) [Area SK 9410 5749] The village of Skinnand once had its church, although it was a small place even in 1086. By 1428 there were fewer than ten householders and, in 1563, three families remained. Air cover gives some indication of the extent of the village. (2-4) Village earthworks, centred at SK 941575, surveyed at 1/2500. (5)
The Medieval village and church described by the previous authorities, were visible as earthworks and cropmarks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The village is centred at SK 9410 5753 and extends over 500m from W-E and 350m from N-S. The earthworks in the eastern half were levelled and subsequently visible as cropmarks. The whole village is surrounded by ploughed out ridge and furrow.
The foundations of the church building, 10m by 5m, are contained within a ditched churchyard enclosure, centred at SK 9401 5754. Surrounding the churchyard on three sides are numerous ditched croft enclosures, 40m by 30m, some containing the embanked foundations of buildings, at SK 9388 5767, SK 9388 5765 and SK 9395 5758. A large pond, 40m by 10m, was identified at SK 9404 5765.
To the east of the churchyard, centred at SK 9420 5752, are further conjoined croft (75m by 25m) and toft (40m by 20m) enclosures, some containing buildings at SK 9423 5759 and SK 9424 5758. A smaller detached group of crofts lies to the SE, centred at SK 9429 5723.
