TOWER HILL

A medieval motte known as Tower Hill, located on the south side of the present village of Stainby. The site comprises a subcircular mound surrounded by a ditch. The motte stands up to 3 metres high, with a flat top around 20 metres in diameter on which the position of buried building remains are indicated by low earthworks. A bank encloses the top of the motte and is thought to define the location of a wall or palisade. The surrounding ditch is between 5 and 10 metres wide and 0.5 metres deep. Scheduled.
