Summary : A Roman bath-house was discovered in 1828 on the south bank of the River Witham, about half a mile south of another bath-house discovered 4 years previously (SK 92 NW 3). Partial excavation revealed the walls and hypocaust remains, as well as quantities of tile, brick, tesserae, pottery and animal remains. The site has been included in Scott's gazetteer of Roman villas. |
More information : [Area SK 928 279] A Roman bath-house was discovered in 1828 on the south bank of the Witham where the course of the river is east and west, some 60 ft. from it, and about 1/2 mile south of the bath-house discovered in 1824 [SK 92 N.W. 3] Partial excavation revealed the foundations of the hypocaust and other chambers. The walls were generally of stone and lime mixed with clay, the floors of cement. Quantities of tiles, bricks and tesserae, (the same kind as from the site to the north) pottery and animal bones were found. (1) No trace of the bath-house was found on the south bank of the river. On the north bank, at SK 9269 2806, RB sherds were found. (2)
