More information : (Centred SK 970281) (2) Westby is mentioned in Domesday. Air photographs show traces of earthworks and suggest a much reduced hamlet. (1-2) Area under plough; No trace of earthworks. (3)
The earthworks described by authorities 1-2 were mapped from poor quality air photographs as part of the Medieval shrunken village of Westby. The following features were seen as earthworks:- three ditch-defined enclosures, approximately 50m wide (centred at SK 9698 2827). Within one of these enclosures is a possible building platform, approximately 40m long (centred at SK 9701 2826). To the east of the enclosures are four rectangular depressions, 8m to 20m in length, possibly representing former building plots (located at SK 9705 2825, SK 9704 2827, SK 9703 2831, SK 9708 2818).
To the south of the main enclosures is a hollow way, approximately 170m long, (centred at SK 9698 2820), and a large ditch-defined enclosure, possibly a field (centred at SK 9704 2809). Also recorded as part of the village were two crewyards, between 10m and 15m wide, centred at SK 9702 2816 and SK 9720 2837. At the north eastern edge of the present village lie two blocks of ridge and furrow, 100m long, centred at SK 9715 2841. (Morph No. LI.798.3.1 - 3.9)
