Hob Uid: 324874
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Corringham
Grid Ref : SK8468089700
Summary : Medieval village settlement is visible as cropmarks. Excavation revealed house foundations and pottery finds dating from 12th to 16th century.
More information : [SK 8470 8965] Somerby Village [G.T.] (Site of) (1)

Somerby was separately assessed in the Subsidy Rolls. In 1377
fifty-four paid tax.
Excavation in 1957 revealed 15th century street cobbling and
house foundations with 16th century additions. There were
traces of earlier occupation, and finds ranged from the 12th to
the 16th century. (2-4)

Save for one fragment of slope & a small water-filled hollow to
the North, this site has been completely ploughed away.
Published survey (25" 1940) revised. (5)

Excavation report: plan, figs, plates. (6)

Descheduled. (7)

The Medieval village settlement described by the previous authorities
was visible as earthworks and mapped from good quality air
photographs. The earthworks were subsequently levelled and visible as
cropmarks. Several hollow ways are flanked by ditched croft
enclosures, on average 70m by 50m, centred at SK 8471 8970. Several
ponds and/or extractive pits are scattered throughout the settlement
(ie at SK 8478 8976 & SK 8464 8967).
