Torksey. Priory of Augustinian Canons, founded temp. Henry II, dissolved 1536. (3)
A main wall of St. Leonard's Priory ran across the field to the north of St. Peter's churchyard; the wall portion is marked by a large elm tree beneath which the foundations remain undisturbed. (4)
The area to the north of St. Peter's is an expanse of mud flats which would not have held a major construction. The main Priory buildings would have probably been situated adjacent to the modern road at approx. SK 83737895 which is the highest point hereabouts. Abbey Close - now a caravan park - appears to occupy the site of the former fishponds. (5) |
