More information : [SK 8945 7719] Moat [GT] (1)
A manorial earthwork consisting of an island refuge contained within a moat. There are no surface indications of steadings.
Published survey (25") revised. (2) The Medieval manorial earthwork referred to by the previous authorities forms part of a Medieval manorial complex and settlement. The manor and settlement have been the subject of a detailed ground survey and historical research. For a full description of these see reference 5. The earthworks have also been mapped from air photographs. The main features are as follows:- the manor comprises a moat, partially surrounding Ingelby Grange, with an attached enclosure. The moat measures 90m by 70m, has an entrance in its west side, and is centred at SK 8943 7716. The enclosure, attached to its north side, measures 135m by 135. A possible pillow mound is incorporated into the north side of this enclosure and is centred at SK 8941 7734. Extending west from the enclosure and pillow mound are the remnants of a hollow way, centred at SK 8930 7714. North and south of this are the disturbed remains of crofts, some overploughed by ridge and furrow. These are centred at SK 8925 7724, SK 8916 7741 and SK 8938 7711. (3-6) |
